Bathroom Remodel Plumbing Estimate: Toilet, Sink and Shower Trim in Silver Spring

By HiTrend Plumbers

A Silver Spring bathroom stripped to the studs needed plumbing for a new toilet, a sink with exposed chrome supply lines, and new shower trim, with a shower pan instead of the tub shown in the design. HiTrend put together an estimate for the plumbing scope.

Gutted bathroom with open wall framing and exposed water supply and drain pipes
Before: The bathroom stripped to the framing, with the existing supply and drain stubs exposed.
Gutted bathroom with open framing, bare floor, drain and supply pipes at left and a cast-iron radiator
Before: The floor and back wall opened up, with the drain and supply pipes at left and the radiator at right.

The question

The bathroom had been gutted down to the framing and subfloor for a remodel. The remodel plan called for a new toilet, a sink whose chrome supply connectors stay visible, and a shower with new trim. The design picture showed a tub, but the plan is a shower pan instead.

What's going on

With the walls and floor open, the existing supply and drain stubs are easy to see and reach. Switching from a tub to a shower pan usually means checking where the drain sits, because a shower pan has a fixed drain position that has to line up with the pipe below. Exposed sink connectors are part of the finished look, so they are typically chosen in a finish that matches the faucet.

What we recommended

  • Reviewed the design pictures and the photos of the gutted bathroom
  • Scoped the plumbing: install the toilet, connect the sink, and install the shower trim
  • Noted the shower pan in place of the tub shown in the design
  • Noted that the sink supply connectors will be chrome and left exposed
  • Prepared an estimate for the plumbing scope

What the estimate covers

  • Toilet
  • Chrome sink supply connectors
  • Shower trim

The result

HiTrend priced the plumbing part of the remodel.

Tips for Silver Spring homeowners

  • If you are swapping a tub for a shower pan, pick the pan before the plumber sets the drain, since left, right and center drain pans need different drain locations.
  • Exposed sink supply lines are part of the look. Match their finish to the faucet, and make sure shutoff valves stay easy to reach.
  • The best time to replace old supply and drain pipes is while the walls are open during a remodel.
